General Overview

The Internal Medicine Department of the Irénée de Bruyn Hospital Center welcomes patients requiring hospital-based medical care for common acute and chronic conditions.
With a capacity of 10 beds, the department provides local, community-focused care tailored to the needs of the population of Saint-Barthélemy.

Our goal is to ensure that each patient receives personalized, safe, and compassionate care, while promoting continuity in the care pathway and a return home as soon as possible.

Our Missions

The department notably manages:

• Infectious diseases

• Common respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, and endocrine conditions

• Exacerbations of chronic illnesses

• Clinical and laboratory monitoring

• Medical care for elderly or frail patients

Each course of care is organized according to validated protocols and national guidelines, in coordination with other hospital departments and local healthcare providers.

A Multidisciplinary Team

The quality of care relies on a dedicated medical and healthcare team composed of:

• General practitioners and visiting specialists

• Nurses

• Nursing assistants

• Physiotherapist (as needed)

• Psychologist (upon request)

• Social worker for medical-social support

The team works closely with private practitioners and healthcare facilities across the region to ensure optimal continuity of care.

A Patient-Centered Approach

Our department places strong emphasis on:

• Quality and safety of care, in accordance with HAS (French National Authority for Health) certification requirements

• Kindness and respect for patients’ rights

• Communication with patients and their families

• Preparation for discharge home or transfer to an appropriate care facility

• Maintaining autonomy, particularly for elderly patients

Relatives are encouraged to take part in the care plan and to stay in contact with the healthcare team.

Admission and Organization

Admission to the Internal Medicine Department takes place:

• Through medical referral

• From outpatient consultations

• Following emergency care

• In coordination with local physicians

An initial assessment is systematically carried out in order to tailor the care plan to the patient’s needs.
